Airoli Toll Plaza, Mulund East, Mumbai: Rates, Address, Location, Direction

Airoli Toll Plaza is one of the main road entry points connecting Mumbai with Navi Mumbai. It is located on Mulund–Airoli Road near the Mumbai-side approach to Airoli Bridge. The route is regularly used by commuters travelling between Mulund, Bhandup, Airoli, Rabale, Ghansoli, Kopar Khairane and other parts of Navi Mumbai.

The toll point is part of Mumbai’s five-entry-point toll system, along with the plazas at Vashi, Dahisar and the two Mulund routes. A major change took effect on October 14, 2024, when Maharashtra waived toll charges for light motor vehicles at these entry points. The exemption was later extended until September 17, 2029. Heavy commercial vehicles, however, continue to be charged.

Airoli is one of the five Mumbai entry toll points covered by the state government’s current light-vehicle waiver. School buses and Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation buses are also included in the exemption.

Airoli Toll Plaza Rates

The current position is different from an ordinary National Highway toll plaza. Cars and other light motor vehicles are not charged at Airoli, while applicable commercial and heavy vehicles continue to pay according to their category.

Vehicle category Current charge per crossing
Motorcycle, scooter or moped Nil
Car, jeep, van or light motor vehicle Exempt
School bus covered by the state waiver Exempt
Maharashtra State Transport bus Exempt
Minibus or eligible light commercial passenger vehicle ₹75
Bus or truck ₹150
Heavy or multi-axle motor vehicle ₹190

The ₹75, ₹150 and ₹190 commercial-vehicle tariffs come from the rate schedule introduced at Mumbai’s five entry points from October 1, 2023. The later waiver removed charges for light motor vehicles and selected bus categories but did not abolish toll collection for heavy commercial traffic.

Drivers of commercial vehicles should check the classification recorded in their registration certificate and FASTag account. The toll plaza’s displayed tariff should be treated as final if the vehicle falls into a category not clearly covered by the waiver.

Toll Waiver for Cars and Light Vehicles

Since October 14, 2024, personal cars and other vehicles registered in the light motor vehicle category have been permitted to cross Airoli Toll Plaza without paying the earlier ₹45 charge. Approximately 2.8 lakh light vehicles were expected to benefit daily across Mumbai’s five entry plazas when the waiver was introduced.

The exemption is currently scheduled to continue until September 17, 2029. The government compensates MSRDC and the toll operator for the revenue lost through the waiver. Toll booths and vehicle-counting systems therefore remain in operation even though eligible vehicles are not charged.

FASTag and Payment Information

Eligible light vehicles may still pass FASTag readers or vehicle-classification cameras even though their payable toll is zero. Drivers should not assume that the presence of toll equipment means a charge must be deducted.

Commercial-vehicle owners should keep their FASTag active and linked to the correct vehicle class. Any incorrect deduction can be disputed with the issuing bank. MSRDC lists 9819814470 and its toll-complaint email service for toll-related concerns.

Traffic and Travel Tips

The Mulund–Airoli route becomes congested during weekday office hours because it is a major link between Mumbai and the commercial areas of Navi Mumbai. Traffic is generally heavier towards Airoli in the morning and towards Mulund in the evening.

Choose the correct lane early and avoid stopping near the toll booths. Heavy trucks frequently use the bridge, so car and two-wheeler users should maintain a safe distance and avoid sudden lane changes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: Is Airoli Toll Plaza the same as Mulund Toll Plaza?

A: No. Airoli Toll Plaza is on Mulund–Airoli Road. Mumbai also has separate toll points on the Eastern Express Highway and LBS Road in Mulund.

Q2: Does the NHAI FASTag Annual Pass cover Airoli Toll Plaza?

A: No. Airoli is part of Maharashtra’s state-controlled Mumbai entry-point system rather than a standard NHAI fee plaza. The NHAI Annual Pass is unnecessary for eligible light vehicles because they are already exempt here.

Q3: Do auto-rickshaws and two-wheelers pay toll at Airoli?

A: Two-wheelers and three-passenger auto-rickshaws have traditionally been listed with a nil toll at Mumbai’s entry plazas. They should use the passage or lane indicated by toll staff.

Q4: Why are the toll booths still operating when cars are exempt?

A: The waiver applies only to selected vehicle categories. Commercial buses, trucks and heavy vehicles are still charged, while systems also record traffic and vehicle classifications.

Q5: What should I do if toll is wrongly deducted from my car?

A: Save the FASTag transaction message and confirm that the vehicle is registered under the correct light motor vehicle category. Raise a dispute with the FASTag-issuing bank and provide the plaza name, vehicle number, crossing time and deducted amount.
